Data center architecture is something that’s been around for years - though many architects are just beginning to call it what it is. When you are constructing a data center, there are some major aspects that you need to consider. While you hope that your architect is going to think of all of these, too, it’s better to err on the side of caution and find out for yourself to be sure. There needs to be sufficient space for air to circulate around all of the servers. If servers are in too small of a room, it’s going to heat up quickly. Too much heat in a room may trigger sensors and you will have a fire. If there is plenty of space, then there will be no issues. It’s better to consider larger floor plans for data center architecture than what you think you will need. This will ensure you are prepared for expansion as well. When the entire data center can be built as a data center, it allows everyone to know what to do and where to allow for wiring. There is going to be a significant amount of wire and cable behind the walls - and if your architect knows this going in, it will simplify the process once you move in. Data center architecture also needs to focus on fire security. Think about how much space you have and how many machines you have in a room. There needs to be fire security for prevention and alarm purposes. This has to be a thought at the very beginning otherwise it’s going to be a matter of learning the hard way - and this doesn’t have to happen. You also want to consider the fact that fire security is going to be a plus when it comes to insuring your building. If you’re not sure what kind of system you need, ask your architect to make recommendations. Data center architecture is completely unique from other types of architecture because of what’s being housed inside. Obviously, doors should not be glass and windows should be minimal. What is the building itself going to be made of? Some building materials are harder to get into than others. As for access points, you have to make sure they are limited.
