Wine tasting is important in order to establish a good matured wine. In order to get a clear sense of a wine’s aroma the room should be clear of strong smells from cooking, perfumes or pets, as this can affect the wines taste. The glass you use is also important, as glass that is the wrong shape or too small can affect the flavour. The age of the wine and the temperature will also have an impact on the taste as well as any residual flavours of what you have eaten before tasting. In order for you to really taste the wine, you need to neutralize tasting conditions. Before pouring wine into a glass, you should first condition the glass by first giving the glass a quick rinse with a little wine by swirling it around to cover all the sides. Once your tasting area is neutral, then you need to examine the wine. Once you have poured a half a glass of wine, look into the glass, then hold the glass up to the light, and finally tilt the glass which will allow you to get a sense of the depth of colour and not just the dark centre. Tasting a wine properly will also give you an indication of the saturation and density of the wine. The aim of tasting the Burch family wines Margaret River is to showcase the diverse range of one of the best Australian wines. The owners aim is to engage and educate consumers and wine industry across the globe about the true personality and character of Australian wine. For instance, when holding the glass up to the light and viewing the wine from the side, this will indicate how clear the wine is. A wine that is murky may have a fermentation or chemical flaw. A wine that is brilliant and clear and has a bit of sparkle is a good sign. To get an indication of the wines weight and age, tilt the glass so that the wine thins out towards the rim. If the wine on the edge of the glass is watery, this means the wine is thin and more often than not an insipid wine. If a white wine shows a brownish colours and a red wine shows a rusty or orange colour, this indicates it is an older wine or the wine has passed its prime due to being oxidized. Burch winery offers a collection of hand crafted wines both Burgundian and west Australian whereby the fruit has been carefully selected from both the Great Southern and Margaret River vineyards. These wines are well noted for their elegance and rare balance.
