For many people, soccer is one of the best events in the world. People across the world play the game with vigor and hope that their playing days never come to an end. Unfortunately, It becomes more difficult to play competitive as age increases. Leagues become sparse, and many people turn to refereeing the game to stay involved with the sport they love. Joshua Lundberg is a soccer referee who is certified by FIFA, the international governing body of soccer. Because of the increased interest in soccer in the United States, there is a growing need for referees in various leagues. Joshua Lundberg gives the following advice to individuals looking to start refereeing. - Show up ready: For new referees, showing up to the field prepared is essential to gaining the respect of both teams. To do this, make sure you know the rules of the game and learn how they are interpreted in the league you are involved with. Local rules can change, including the accepted size of balls, substitution rules, and uniform requirements. By knowing these details before you start your game, you can make sure that the teams know that you know your stuff.
- Look the part: One of the biggest parts of gaining the respect of the players is looking like you deserve it. Show up prepared and dressed for the game. Joshua Lundberg says that this means you should wear the referee uniform the proper way and pay attention to details, like remembering your whistle and cards.
- Act like a referee: Frequently, referees have their background in playing the game, which means that they are used to complying with or arguing with the referee. The shift to being the referee can be difficult, according to Joshua Lundberg. Joshua Lundberg encourages referees to remember that they are in authority. Be firm with the players and coaches, and be clear and concise when giving instructions. Coaches will appreciate the mutual respect and players will respond to clear instructions.
Following Joshua Lundberg's example and playing the part of a referee is a great way to stay involved in the beautiful game. For Joshua Lundberg and many others, refereeing keeps them connected and allows them to experience the joy of new players taking the pitch. Joshua Lundberg is proud of his work as a referee, and hopes to continue in this role for many seasons to come.
