As the Iberia Manager for a highly respected United Kingdom based bank, Peter Mottek is highly qualified to advise travelers on the best sights to see when visiting Portugal. With his own work situated in Lisbon, Peter Mottek has plenty of opportunity to get acquainted with the best sights to see in this half of the Iberian Peninsula. - To begin, Peter Mottek highly recommends starting out your trip in Lisbon. Peter Mottek himself knows Lisbon very well, because he manages the region’s banking from that very city. You can’t go to Lisbon without visiting the Baixa, or the downtown area, advises Peter Mottek. This area of the city has old traditional shops and cafes.
- You can’t visit the Iberian Peninsula without experiencing its beaches. Peter Mottek recommends taking a trip out to the Algarve, which has some of the most beautiful beaches and villages in the country. For golfers who are looking to find a green somewhere away from home, Peter Mottek notes that the golf courses in the Algarve are world-renowned.
- For those interested in the Romantic period, Peter Mottek recommends visiting the city of Sintra and in particular its Palacio da Pena. This palace is situated right on top of the Monte de Pena, allowing for beautiful views in every direction. Inside the palace is a magnificent chapel, with a famous alabaster altarpiece.
- Next, Peter Mottek advises visiting Coimbra. The University of Coimbra located in the city was founded in 1290, making it one of the oldest universities on the entire continent, notes Peter Mottek. Additionally, the city itself is amazingly picturesque, another near pristine example of romanticism in the country, adds Peter Mottek.
- For those who have some time to stray away from the mainland, Peter Mottek highly recommends taking a trip to the Azores. The Azores, says Peter Mottek, are nine islands that are situated in the Atlantic Ocean just a few hours by plane from Boston, Massachusetts. This region is particularly special because these islands allow for a number of water sports, including whale watching. Different from United States-based whale watching, Peter Mottek recommends this European region’s version of the activity. In the Azores, according to Peter Mottek, whale watching entails going out in a small motorboat to see whales like orcas, sperm whales, and northern bottle nose whales.
Of course, these are not the only sights to see in the nation of Portugal, says Peter Mottek. The resources listed below can help visitors find even more places to explore. http://www.neverstoptraveling.com/the-top-10-places-in-portugal http://www.visitportugal.com/Cultures/EN-US/default.html
