Eating a helthy diet can be a smart move to make in your life. At the beginning it will take some time and effort, though. Have you decided to improve your nutrition? One of the first things you might be wondering is what steps you need to begin with.

Whole grain is a far better alternative to refined white grains. Refined grain products have lost a lot of fiber and protein; their whole-wheat counterparts have these valuable nutrients intact. Whole grains are still very satisfying without being heavy or unhealthy. You want to see the word "whole" on the label.

Eating fresh fruits and veggies daily is good nutrition advice. The goal as suggested by the USDA is to eat at least 9 and up to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Although this number sounds very high, it really isn't too difficult to include all these servings. Drink a glass of orange juice for breakfast of add tomato sauce to your spaghetti.

People who are pregnant or lactating need to pay more attention to nutrition than everyone else. Protein is essential for a woman who is expecting. A smoothie prepared with egg whites is an excellent way to get protein even when you're feeling ill. Eggs provide excellent sources of protein for your body with few bad organic components. Use pasteurized eggs to avoid health problems.

Aim to consume numerous types of protein every single week. Opt for fish, skinless poultry and lean meats. Eggs are are good source of protein. Studies have shown that a single egg eaten daily does no harm. Have a meatless day at least once a week. On your designated day, get your fix with peas, beans, low-sodium, reduced calorie peanut butter and unsalted nuts.

Use artificial sweeteners in lieu of sugar. Too much sugar can lead to many health issues, including serious heart problems. Replace your sugar with things like Stevia or some other kind of artificial sweetener. The difference in taste is difficult (or even impossible) to notice.

It's often said that processed grains taste much better than whole grains. White flour does taste better in some items made in bakeries. Nonetheless, whole grains are far more healthful in terms of fiber and nutrition, and you can usually substitute about a quarter whole grain flour in almost any baked goods recipe successfully.

Grains which have been highly milled should be minimized in any diet. The important nutrients from grains are eliminated when the husk and hull are removed during milling. Ask yourself, is it beneficial to get rid of these grains, only to turn around and get fiber or wheat germ? No, that is a dumb idea.

Eat dark chocolate instead of white chocolate or milk chocolate. Dark chocolate contains chemicals called flavonoids that are known to keep blood pressure under control. Antioxidants also tip the balance of HDL and LDL cholesterol toward the "good" HDL variety. Just make sure that you pick chocolate made from a minimum of 70 percent of cocoa in order to get the most benefit. Of course, you shouldn't go overboard. Chocolate still has a lot of calories and is best enjoyed in moderation.

A diabetic nutrition plan requires that you consult with your doctor about any possible alcohol restrictions. As a diabetic, drinking alcohol can decrease your body's blood sugar levels.

Many nutritionists recommend supplemental B12 vitamins for expectant mothers. Eating plenty of foods rich in vitamin B12 can reduce the risks of developing some birth defects. Most people do not need to worry about vitamin B-12 deficiency, however, women who are strict dieters should be sure to get enough.

As you've read, nutrition can better your life. Although it requires a large amount of planning, monitoring, and patience, it's worth it because it leads to a healthier and happier life.
