Online tournament backgammon is increasing in popularity. It presents the player with alternative ways to play the game and win prizes for very little outlay. Entry fees (known as the buy-in) are often minimal and some tournaments are even free to enter. So by playing tournament backgammon you get a new challenge with the potential to win the prize pool going up against a variety of opponents from all over the world. Here is an overview of some different types of tournament backgammon. It is essentially a competition involving a number of players all playing at the same time managed b y the online backgammon provider. The winner is then determined based on the results of the individual matches. Who plays who and when is randomly determined and you can usually track your progress and position in the tournament as you are playing. Are you near the money or do you have work to do to get there? A sit and go backgammon tournament is just like it sounds. The number of players is stated along with the buy-in and prize pool. After you put up your stake you take your seat at the online backgammon table. The tournament then begins once all seats are taken. This is usually anywhere between four and sixty-four players. The more players, the longer the tournament will take to play though the bigger the prize fund too. Scheduled backgammon tournaments are slotted to start at specific times and have specific conditions. The online backgammon room your play in will show all tournaments clearly and you can decide which you wish to enter once registration is open. The more entries, the bigger the money on offer to those who progress far enough in the tournament to hit a pay-out. A swing backgammon tournament is a variant where each players starts with a given, but equal, number of chips. Competitors are randomly matched and play continues until one player has won all the chips in circulation. If, when a new game starts, one players has a lower number of chips than the specific “chips per point” they would be deemed to be “all in” (not unlike poker) and go out should they lose. The chips per point value is raised gradually throughout the tournaments which is another similarly to poker where the blinds rise. Satellite backgammon tournaments are often run with those making the cut (as determined by the tournament rules) will progress to later rounds of a big tournament. The buy-in for satellite rounds is much lower than entering at the main stage. It is therefore possible to play your way in to a higher stakes (and therefore higher prize value) tournament for little money. Another variant is a knockout tournament. You play one fixture per round with the top ranked players progressing to the next round and so on. With each new round, the number of players decreases as do the number to progress. Ultimately the final round is one fixture head to head with the winner taking the spoils. So there’s the “skinny” on the various forms of tournament backgammon which can be played online.
