Marble originally refers to the white limestone with black texture which is native to Dali, Yunnan. The ancients often choose those marbles with decorative patterns to make painted screen or Mosaics. When marbles are applied for flooring, their wide array of designs and colors which range from the darkest black to the lightest pink, soon make them popular in decoration industry. As a kind of decorative material, it not only has the features of ceramic tile, but it also has unique appearance. In addition, because of its calcium carbonate and mineral composition, marble is strong and durable that makes it a popular choice for tile flooring in both commercial and residential settings. The marble floor tiles have three basic finishes: polished, honed and tumbled. Besides the glossy appearance, polished marble tiles also have square, straight edges. The polish brings out the natural colors of the marble and makes the tile stain-resistant. And, due to its slippery surface and it can make scratches or damage highly noticeable, it is not recommended as a flooring tile in a high-traffic area. Because of the glaze, if acidic substances come into contact with them, polished marble tiles will not absorb sealer but etch easily. Common polished marble tile applications include foyer flooring, walls, bathroom vanities and accenting around fireplaces. The distinct feature for honed marble tile is the matte finish. It has a natural look and has square, straight edges. Compared with polished marble tiles, honed marble tile can hide wear and tear well and it can work well as flooring in high traffic areas. However, these tiles stain easily unless sealed with a quality sealer and maintained on a regular basis. Honed tiles also etch easily despite being sealed, especially in kitchen applications where acidic substances may come into contact with the tile. Tumbled marble tiles are made by placing marble tiles in a tumbler with sand. As the tumbler rotates, the sand smoothes the marble and gives it an antique appearance with some chips and rounded edges. With the less slippery surface than polished marble tiles and honed marble tiles, this kind of tiles is a good choice for flooring. In addition to being commonly installed in kitchens, bathrooms and around fireplaces, tumbled marble tiles are used in outdoor applications such as patios or exterior walls. Due to the exorbitant price of marble, the floor tiles' daily maintenance becomes particularly important, for the floor can be damaged with improper care and cleaning. Common household cleaning items, such as bleach, vinegar and ammonia, can etch the marble leaving unsightly scratches on floors. As long as use the proper care, the marble floors will last a long lifetime. People can clean the floor with a soft mop dampened in a pH neutral cleaning liquid designed for stone flooring and dry clean it every few days using a dust mop.
