A privacy screen is a barrier which is used to provide privacy for homes or businesses. When privacy screens are used in the home environment it is usually to shield people from each other, providing a more intimate, comfortable living environment. In businesses such as a law office or a medical clinic, a privacy screen is often used to maintain confidentiality between the professional and his client. A privacy screen has only one intention and that is to provide privacy, it is not intended to act as a security barrier or a way to confine. Many suburban subdivisions do not have large lots resulting in the homes being built rather close to one another. Privacy screens are often built, or grown in the case of a hedge, as a way to contain a family’s activity to their own space and to screen the neighbors. Of course, most people get along well with their neighbors but there are times when you do not want to feel obligated to chat if you are both out at the same time. A screen can provide this privacy and they are also helpful as a sound barrier. When used in an office environment, there are often legal or ethical reasons for a privacy screen. If a doctor is consulting with a patient it behooves the doctor to conduct this consultation in private. In many cases an office may not have a full time dedicated receptionist, there may be a person who greets people when they arrive but has other clerical responsibilities as well. In these cases, the clerk will usually be seated on one side of a solid office wall, connected to the entry area by a sliding window with frosted glass. The guest can be greeted by sliding the panel open and then the clerk can go back to work in a more private environment. Many offices subscribe to an open plan design, using discreetly placed privacy screens to shield certain activities, leaving the rest of the space open. This may be true to shield the entrances to the office bathrooms so that others cannot inadvertently see inside. A privacy screen may also be used to segregate a small area for brief meetings.
