Farrukh Chaudhry is a board certified and licensed physician. Upon graduating from the Allama Iqbal Medical School in Lahore, Pakistan, Farrukh Chaudhry accepted a job at Kaplan Test Prep & Inc. Farrukh Chaudhry is invested in academic medicine as well as serving as a mentor to students; thus, he hopes to provide tips on how to do well on the MCAT. Farrukh Chaudhry is aware that doing well on the MCAT is a daunting and time consuming task; however, with these tips the test will seem less intimidating. - You have to prepare thoroughly. A common misconception students have regarding the MCAT is they do not need to prepare thoroughly if they are doing well in their pre-med courses. Farrukh Chaudhry warns, do not fall for this myth. Farrukh Chaudhry suggests signing up for a MCAT-prep course, or purchasing an at-home program. Most students have to spend 200 to 300 hours preparing for the exam, and around 50 percent sit for the exam a second time because they did not prepare enough.
- Take practice exams. Farrukh Chaudhry notes that practice exams are the best way to prepare for the real thing. Students should take one exam a week for 12 weeks prior to the actual exam. This will help ease nerves and condition your mind for the time consuming exam.
- Do not focus on memorization, focus on theory. Farrukh Chaudhry notes that the MCAT is a reading comprehension and thinking test, not one that requires memorization. The MCAT will provide you with necessary formulas and reactions that you can utilize while solving a problem. It is more crucial to understand the logic behind the problems while studying than it is to remember the method.
- Practice using a timer. Farrukh Chaudhry recommends timing yourself while taking practice exams. Since the MCAT times each section, it is important you master the skill of completing each section in the amount of time allotted. Farrukh Chaudhry states that timing yourself will allow you to learn time management, so you know if you need to move faster or slower during the actual exam.
- Rest before the actual exam. Farrukh Chaudhry advises to commence studying a few days before taking the exam. If you have consistently studied and taken practice tests, you are ready, so don’t doubt yourself. Take the needed time to relax so your brain is ready to function at its full capacity on test day.
