A sump pump is a submersible pump that helps with keeping the water out of the basement of a house. It is placed in a hole in the basement floor known as a sump pit. If the basement floods, the water will directly flow into the pit and then pumped out side of the home. A sump pump can also make the difference between a wet and dry basement. And the selection of a sump pump depends greatly on the application in which it will be used. Then how to select the appropriate product?
Following are some key points which can be taken into consideration:
1. Water level sensing switch type Pressure switches are fully enclosed with pump body inside, making them immune to obstructions or floating debris in the sump basin. They are typically factory set and not adjustable, while float switches can be adjusted in place to set the high and low water levels in the sump basin. Float switches, especially the types attached to the end of a short length of flexible electrical cable, can get tangled or obstructed, in particular, when the pump is prone to movement in the basin due to torque effects when starting and stopping.
2. Power cord length The length of the cord of any special switches which may be connected to the pump should be considered seriously. Running for a long distance from the main service panel, a more powerful electrical motor is required of heavier gauge wires to guarantee the sufficient voltage at the motor for proper pump performance.
3. Automation and manual operation Selection of a manual sump pump means that one will turn the pump on and off at appropriate water levels when the occasion is appropriate also. Automatic switches consist of pressure switches, low level pressure switches and float switches.
4. Head pressure The head pressure of a sump pump explains the maximum height that the pump will move water. For example, a sump pump with a 15 feet shutoff head will lift water up 15 feet before it completely loses flow. Other considerations may be added to overall head pressure, including loss from elbows and long horizontal runs.
