When I first learned I would be writing about someone in the CNC equipment business, at first, it didn't bring back any memories and emotions. Then I remembered all the way back to age 3, going with my father in his fledgling real estate business to open houses that had signs everywhere. Signs outside, signs inside, signs describing what was for sale, all the unique amenities, etc. While all the adults seemed fascinated with the look and feel and location of the home, the number of bedrooms and baths etc., I was feeling the signs which instructed people how large each bedroom was/is, how far from the nearest schools and/or houses of worship. Until this day, just like the first time I ever saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan around 1963 or so, I can remember playing with the signs every Saturday and Sunday at Dad's real estate business. When a cool one-hit-wonder band called The Five Man Electrical Band produced the song "Signs Signs Everywhere Signs", around the mid-60s, I was a bit conflicted. The song sounded good enough, but it was berating one of my favorite things…signs. Then I came across a professional in the CNC equipment business named Eric Yin who lives in Johannesburg, South Africa. Eric took the time to explain to me the CNC business, and one of the products that is in that business which is known as the vinyl cutter. He sells them. I wondered why anyone would need a vinyl cutter, but learned from Eric that it is standard equipment for the signage business. A person using it can make signs by cutting out the shapes/letters on vinyl paper. Imagine my fascination, of a young kid who only by fate didn't end up in the sign business, who is now 59 as I am, learning from a real pro just what CNC equipment and more importantly the vinyl cutter does. Vinyl cutters is but one part of this fascinating industry. Others include CNC Routers and laser engraving and cutting machines which Eric also sells. I didn't have a clue about this until Eric explained it. His company Advanced Machinery builds machines at "Made In China"-prices locally by working together with machine manufacturers and sets up assembly lines in Johannesburg. He sells locally and nationwide. By this ingenious business model, Eric is able to sell very high quality CNC equipment at not only prices generally lower than products made in China, but back them up with the great sales support he feels people deserve after purchasing from him. He takes that seriously; and that's why Eric Yin is my "Professional Of The Week". --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Author Rick London is an author, cartoonist and designer. He is best known for launching Londons Times Cartoons in 1997 (LTCartoons.com). More recently, he launched a weekly column in which he profiles a professional that he has discovered on the Internet of whom he was impressed. This week's pro is Eric Yin, owner of Advanced Machinery which is known to be the top sellers with the best prices of vinyl cutters and other CNC Machinery in South Africa.
