We’ve been taking a look at a pretty interesting aspect of glass technology and we’re going to wrap that up today. The implications of this particular type of glass technology for niche segments of the window manufacturing world are pretty cool. We’ve been looking at photochromics, which is the reversible transformation of a chemical reaction via electromagnetic radiation. This is just a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo for describing the process of visual change within glass allowing for the darkening or lightening of tint within a piece of glass. The most popular form of this technology is found in color changing lenses for sunglasses. The reason we don’t see a lot of this technology outside of this application is because the chemical process responsible for such change cannot (as of yet) be made stable enough to withstand extreme long-term exposure. This means the technology is not yet fit for long-term outdoor usage. The switching speed of the photochromic dyes used to precipitate the visual change in the glass is highly sensitive and must be so to change quickly enough to account for the speed with which light environments can change. It’s not clear whether this technology will eventually be perfected and find it’s way into more practical uses within homes (like automatically darkening windows for energy efficiency, or whether it will stay confined to sunglasses and other niche usages. Regardless, it is a pretty fascinating technology, which, give the right circumstances, could become an invaluable part of the window manufacturing industry. Who knows, maybe in some distant future, we’ll all be living in glass cubes with nothing but photochromic aluminum windows and vinyl windows, automatically darkening during the day and readjusting at night. I can’t imagine a single scenario where this would ever happen, so it’s probably not worth thinking about much more, but you never know! Moving on from the fascinating world of photochromics, we are going to take a quick look at the term picture window and what it means for the average window manufacturer or producer of quality replacements windows. A picture window is a large fixed window, framed so that it is almost always longer horizontally that it is vertically with the intention of providing a more of a panoramic view. If you were hoping for a more complex idea behind the term, we’re sorry to disappoint. It is a pretty basic idea, and whether we’re talking aluminum windows or vinyl windows, it is pretty much an industry standard.
