So how does a tiny little seed become a hardwood mat? Thinking caps on, everyone? Well, there is a process called germination. Germination is probably one of the most critical aspects to hardwood mat production. Without germination, a seed could never become a tree, and the lack of that subsequent tree would certainly and obviously equate to a lack of material from which a hardwood mat could be made. That being said, without photosynthesis, or the intricate vascular system of a tree, hardwood mats would also not exist. Take the sun out of the equation, and man, you’ve got one heck of a lack of hardwood mats on your hands. You’re also going to have some bigger fish to fry if the sun happens to go dark, so we can cross that one off our list of things to consider. Anywho, back to our drive by glimpse at germination. It is fascinating to consider that a tiny seed that eventually becomes a tree, can sit dormant until the conditions are right to sprout. The intricacy and complexity of this reality is staggering. Once said seed is allowed the proper conditions for germination, the DNA contained within the seed will begin to play out, dictating it’s “directions” and slowly bring to life a living organism where once there was only a seed. Upon germination, the sprig of life will begin its raving pursuit of light, which will continue until the day it is harvested. The seedling will reach through dark earth toward the sky and towards the light. Once the seedling breaks from the earth, it stretches itself skyward consuming every bit of nutrient and water and sunlight it can get it’s greedy little hands on. Its roots will stretch themselves into the earth below, and the above ground sprout will work on sprouting leaves. As the tree matures, the leaves will continue to grow and gravitate toward the sun, the roots will carry on with their excavation into the earth in search of vital minerals and nutrients found within the soil, and the tender stem will begin to solidify and become a woody trunk. As we fast-forward into the mature life of the tree, we will see it continue to send out new branches and leaves and reach ever skyward. We’ll also see it begin to produce fruit or nuts or seeds and carry on the vastly complex circle of life.
