Studies have also shown that there is a higher risk of miscarriage for women who are over 45, as well as a higher risk of birth defects. Women may have a higher percentage of genetically abnormal eggs as they get older, which helps explain the higher risk of complications and birth defects. Many women who are using IVF to get pregnant after 45 may require egg donation, as most of their eggs are genetically abnormal.
