Fairway woods still have a place in almost every bag. For me a good fairway wood must perform a couple of important tasks. I recently had the opportunity to demo the 2013 Ping G25 fairway wood and RBZ Stage 2 Fairway Wood on the range and on the course I was very pleased with the results. The G25 features the thinnest face that PING has ever put in a fairway wood. The pear-shaped clubhead and subtle graphics with PING logo stretching across the sole is beautiful, as too, the familiar charcoal non-glare finish which eliminates reflection and inspires confidence. We were also big fans of the big alignment aid, shaped like half a ball. Generous head size but it’s smaller than the G20 and a little shorter from heel to toe. I am a big fan of the cheap Ping G25 driver, So much so that one now resides in my golf bag. Like the driver, the Ping G25 fairway woods come in a charcoal, non-glare finish. They also have what Ping calls an "extreme variable thickness" clubface, designed to translate the energy of impact into higher ball speeds. The club is fuelled with an innovative TFC 189F shaft – a lightweight, high balance-point shaft developed specifically for the G25 – and that no doubt helped increase clubhead speed. The G25 also provided us with low spin and that contributed to some decent roll. Superb forgiveness on off-centre hits and requires little effort to get the ball airborne. The discount TaylorMade RBZ Stage 2 Fairway Wood may scream distance gains but it’s the lower profile and shallower clubface that gets us most excited as this makes it exceptionally easy to launch the ball in the air. The 3-wood was also relatively easy to draw and fade – perfect for when requiring a shaped second into a par-5. As for the crown design, it might take some getting used to, but once you do, you’ll be aligning with confidence. I wasn’t sure about the ‘V’ design on the non-glare white crown at first but after a while, my eyes were fixated on the left-hand side of the head at address and I could align with confidence. And just as the case with the cheap R1 driver, the eye-catching racing lines at the top and bottom provide the essence of power and speed, which is exactly what this club delivers. The trailing edge sits low and close to the turf, making this 3-wood exceptionally easy to launch. Some players may prefer a more compact, workable head but not for us. It’s ideal and does the job. I love the appearance of discount golf clubs. As for the crown design, it might take some getting used to, but once you do, you’ll be aligning with confidence.
