The Gulf of Corryvreckan is home to the world’s third largest whirlpool and lies between the charismatic and geographically striking isles of Jura and Scarba. By far the best way to explore the area is to undertake one of the incredible Corryvreckan boat trips available in the locality. The islands of Argyll appear remote to the unfamiliar eye, but the passage from mainland to island is part of everyday life for those islanders passing from the mainland to home. Nonetheless, this gulf is a notorious stretch of water and should not be undertaken lightly. Sailing vessels with limited engine power may not always travel through the passage safely, but instead a high powered RIB such as those used by Seafari Adventures, based out of Easdale Harbour south of Oban, are much more adaptable to the conditions which a Corryvreckan boat trip could throw at you! Your Corryvreckan boat trip will not only take you to see the natural phenomena of the world famous whirlpools but incoming currents also bring with them a phenomenal supply of food for our resident wildlife. Nutrients stream into the area, fuelling massive plankton production to support fish communities. These species suffer the confusing effects of such powerful water currents and as such shoal together for protection. Little do they know, this makes them amazingly easy pickings for larger, more striking species experienced on many Corryvreckan boat trips, such as minke whales, bottlenose dolphins and basking sharks within the water, as well as both golden and white-tailed sea eagles in the skies. The scenery experienced on this area of the west coast of Scotland is very dramatic with highly variable weather conditions, and this often attracts visitors to return year on year. The wildlife and the whirlpool are predictably unpredictable, meaning visitors could even take the same Corryvreckan boat trip twice in the same day and still experience different tidal flows, weather conditions and wildlife encounters! Seafari Adventures provide a boat trip to suit all, from their fast, open RIB, wild and wet whirlpool specials, to the more sheltered 6 hour day trips in their cabin RIBs to Iona or Colonsay, allowing time onshore the islands to explore. Working with a fleet of 5, 12-seater boats, they can cater for almost anyone, from hen and stag parties, to family birthday parties, to passing tourists and much more in between.
