Web design is one of the most important facets to a company in the modern world, especially if that happens to be a company that sells products on the web. So how can you make your site a more user friendly website? In this post I share 4 simple tips to a more user friendly web design. They are much easier than you think, and the results they produce are worth their weight in gold. Site Load Time The load time of your site is imperative to your user satisfaction. No one wants to watch paint dry, just like no one wants to watch a page load. By minimizing the page load time you will make users happier, and also more likely to navigate from page to page of your site rather than exit due to the load times. Keep load page downs by limiting large videos, photos, flash, and other files. By working with your developer on the CSS and using things like image sprites and compressing, you can minimize load time for images/icons, and ads. This will help a lot for users visiting your site as it will minimize the amount of data they have to receive every time they visit your site. Users should be able to grasp information on your site quickly and without much effort. By using clean typography you can effectively ease the process and help make your users happier when visiting your site. This is especially important for sites with long articles. If you have journalistic pieces or long articles, be sure to focus on your typography, otherwise it deters the reader from seeing so much information at once. Some keys to focus on are the font choices, color combinations, and spacing. Pick beautiful, easy-to-read fonts, work with simple colors and clean call to actions, and space elements out on your page to keep the design clean and less cluttered. Simplified Navigation & User Experience When creating your website, considering the user experience is very important. By simplifying it, you could lead to a happier user who in turn spends more time on your site, and very well may buy your products or services. Be sure to have a clear and simple navigation. Make it easy for the user to travel from page to page with ease; otherwise they’ll likely go elsewhere. Also focus on making the navigation easy to understand. By using common words like “home, about, blog, support”, the user is able to easily decide where they need to navigate. Make sure to stay away from the odd navigation titles so that your users are not confused. Next remember the importance of the search functions. Recently we released a tumblr theme at SkyTip Media. One of the first support requests was to add a search feature, and this was then repeated by multiple customers. Obviously we went on to fix it, but it just shows how important search features are. Users want the ability to find older content, remember a recent article, or look for specific posts based on their interests. By adding a search bar you give them that ability easily and quickly. Finally remember to keep your menus and navigation simple, if you need to use multiple layers for separate categories that is fine, just try to keep them clean and organized so that the user finds it easier to navigate. Ease of Use Being able to make your website work across multiple browsers, devices, and screen sizes is important. This will help you make the experience better for your entire audience and will keep more users on your site even if they are on a mobile device. Work on building a responsive website that is adaptive to many different technologies and your audience will be better suited.
