Many centuries ago, when candles were first invented, they were primarily used as a source of light. At that time no one would have ever imagined how the use of candles would totally change with the passing of time. Now, no longer used primarily for providing light, candles have come to be used for several other things – mainly for the interior decoration and automatizing a place, for which special type of candles called scented candles are used. Candles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, designs, colors and fragrances to suit every need and taste. Depending on the kind of look or mood you want to create, their used can be determined. Let us take a closer look at some of the most common kind of candles available in the market today. All of these are available in both scented and non-scented varieties - • Pillar Candle – this is one of the most popular types of candle. It is a thick and generally not very tall candle. Its height varies from three to six inches. It is mostly round in shape but can have any other geometrical shape too. It usually has a single wick and is free standing. As it is quite thick, it burns for very long. It can be used anywhere and for any occasion. It also makes a great center piece. • Dinner Candle or Tapered Candle–this is a thin and tall candle which has a tapered top. It is a single wick candle and due to its thin size, burns fast. It is called a dinner candle as it is mostly placed on a dining table. Such candles are generally odorless so as to not conflict with the aroma and enjoyment of the food. It is best used with pretty little candle holders as they ensure it stands straight. This candle looks absolutely beautiful and classy. • Tea-light Candle – this is a small candle which burns inside a container or candle holder. Depending on the size and quality of wax and wick, a tea-light candle would burn for anywhere between three to five hours. It is called a tea-light candle as in olden times it was used to keep the tea-pot hot. However, now-a-days, it is used for decoration as well. A collection of tea-light candles grouped together, creates a wonderful look. • Jar Candle or Container Candle – this is a candle which is made by pouring hot liquid wax into a non-flammable container like glass or tin. It is supposed to burn in the container itself. It comesin a variety of jars such as jelly jars, mason jars, beverage glasses, flower pots etc. As it is inside a jar, the scented candles in this category emit a much stronger fragrance as compared to the free standing ones. Also colorful candles in glass jars look absolutely superb. • Votive Candle – this is a small candle which was earlier used for religious purposes and was typically white or bee wax yellow. However, now it refers to any candle which is two inches tall by one and a half inch diameter. It is burnt in small glasses or cups made for this purpose and burns anywhere between five to eight hours. It generally has a strong flame and is thus used for adding a wonderful golden glow to any place. • Floating Candle – this is a small candle, with a little wick on top, made in molds of various shapes such as flowers, fruits, basic geometrical designs, etc. It is used by placing it in a bowl of water. Wax has the ability to float and thus these candles don’t sink to the bottom of the bowl. This type of candle is mostly used for home decoration purposes. For an added effect flower petals or colored stones can be placed in the water too. These candles are a must have for any special occasion or festival. • Gel Candle – it is a candle that is made from a mixture of mineral oil and polymer and is always burnt inside a pot. It can be clear or in any translucent color. It can also be made with decorative scenes inside the gel. It looks absolutely beautiful and is a great decorative item. However, a lot of care should be taken while using this candle as the gel tends to get very hot. • Designer Candle or Specialty Candle – this is a special kind of candle which is made from high quality wax. It may be of any three dimensional shape imaginable and is specifically used for the decoration and ornamentation of any place. It is quite popularly used for parties, celebrations, festivals and other such special occasions. Over the last several years candles have come to be recognized as beautiful items of interior décor like aromatherapy scented candles. In fact, they are widely used all over the world to create a special ambiance, effect and mood. Everything seems more wonderful by the candlelight as candles add warmth, style and beauty to every place. While there is a large variety of scented candles available in the market to choose from, a little thought should be given to how, when and where to use a particular candle before purchasing it, so as to ensure its optimal use.
