A lot of people are always wondering one thing when it comes to buy a musical instrument such a piano: should I buy a traditional piano, or a digital piano. And while we’ll go through the pros and cons of both, the truth is that in 2013, it just might be best to step into the 21st century and make the digital investment. When it comes to a traditional piano, you know exactly what you’re getting, right? You’re getting a piano that’s big, strong, and well made. You’re getting a product that’s existed for centuries, and something that’s deemed to be the “old reliable” and “go to” musical instrument for everyone from singers to composers. Where would all the greats be without their trust traditional pianos? But, there’s another side to the coin. And that side is this: the world is changing, and our needs for our musical instruments are changing, too. Before, you would go home, sit down at the piano, and play your heart out for hours. Now, life is different. One day, you need to play in your house. The next day, you need to play in front of one of your friends—30 miles away from your house. Or, better yet, you’ve been accepted into a music school, and rather than buy a new piano or rent one (which you’d be forced to do with a traditional piano), you now have the option of buying a digital piano and transporting it around with you as you see fit. And that’s not all, of course. You need to be able to replicate music. You need to be able to plug headphones into your piano via a USB cable. You need to be able to easily put the music you create from your genius onto some sort of portable and shareable media. That’s the age that we’re now living in. It’s a digital, social, and shareable world. So why wouldn’t the music we not only download for fun, but create from our mind and executed through our fingers, embody this fundamental philosophy too? Well, they do. The question is, do you embrace it back? Yes, traditional pianos have their place and avid fans. They are sturdy and highly well made. They are beautiful to look at—a digital piano, for the most part, isn’t going to replicate the majesty and the beauty of a traditional piano sitting proudly at the bottom of your stair case. But digital pianos are practical. They are easy. And they can be crafted and finely tuned to specifically address people at different stages of the musical education. What does that mean? That means that if you’re a beginner at piano, there’s an piano for Beginners. And if you’re more of an advanced user, there’s a piano (or several) for you that will fit perfectly in this area. The truth is that there’s no right or wrong answer, as you can’t go wrong with either one. But if you want to future-proof yourself, it’s best you go with a traditional piano.
