Things You Should Consider When Buying Unvented Hot Water Cylinders

Unvented hot water cylinders are an excellent choice for homes which have a larger number of inhabitants. If you choose to invest in a hot water system that utilises sufficiently sized, unvented hot water cylinders, then you can say goodbye to the days when the hot water would run out just before you were about to get in the shower, or the days where you could not run two hot water taps at the same time, for fear that they would both suddenly run cold. If you have decided to purchase a system which used unvented hot water cylinders, here are a few things that you may want to consider to help you to pick exactly the right system for your household needs:

Volume: If you live in a large household, the volume of the hot water storage tank is probably the most important consideration that you will have to make. As a general rule, a 200 litre cylinder will be appropriate for the everyday needs of a family of 4 to 5 people. If your family is smaller than this, you may want to consider getting a smaller tank, so that you are not wasting money heating water that won't be used. If your family is larger, tanks which are bigger than 200 litres are also available.

Dimensions: Once you have decided on what volume of cylinder your household will require, you can start searching for a tank with the appropriate external dimensions. Some 200 litre tanks will be short and fat, whilst others may be taller and skinnier. To find an appropriately dimensioned tank, consult with an expert on which area of the property would be the best location for the cylinder tank to be situated, and then work out how much space is available in this location. There is no point in buying a tank which is too wide or tall to fit in your existing airing cupboard.

Weight: Some types of cylinder are very heavy. Larger cylinders also weight more than smaller ones. Whilst most buildings are designed to be able to hold even the heaviest cylinders, if you are planning on having a hot water cylinder in a loft area or in an older house, you should consult with an expert to ensure that the cylinder will not be too heavy for your floor to be able to support it safely.

Heat retention properties: Cylinder tanks are available in a range of different metals and alloys, all of which will have slightly different heat retention properties. A cylinder which loses a lot of heat will result in lots of wasted energy and high energy bills. The best cylinders will hardly lose any heat at all, over the course of 24 hours. However, these cylinders may also be heavier or more expensive. When you are choosing a cylinder, consider the heat loss specifications, but remember that if you have to buy a cylinder that losses a little bit more heat initially, there may be other ways to reduce the levels of heat loss.

You should consider all of these things when you are buying unvented hot water cylinders. If you need more advice, talk about your needs with an expert in unvented hot water cylinders. You can click here for more information.
