After some initial sceptics about the use of the HIV rapid test kits they have been well received across may medical sectors as an effective and accessible HIV testing method. HIV rapid tests are now used in HIV clinics, health centres, community centres and of course by individuals at home who are concerned about their HIV status or possible HIV symptoms. A recent study in the August edition of the journal AIDS Patient Care and STDs reports that researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine within the Yeshiva University found that community-based pharmacies are suitable locations for offering rapid HIV testing and thus for diagnosing HIV and effectively referring those with the HIV virus on to further medical care and counselling if desired. The important advantage these community based pharmacies have is accessibility and convenience. They will to some part allow people to test how may otherwise not go out of their way to seek testing. In many countries any form of blood testing at pharmacies is prohibited. Potentially these laws need to be revised to cater for the threat of HIV. The Centres of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that HIV infection rates, despite all efforts are remaining constant and as we know in some countries they are increasing. Australia in recent years has had a higher than previous number of HIV infections and alternative HIV testing solutions are required to reverse this trend. Treatment that is improving and despite significant medical breakthroughs is still a solution that simply arrives too late in the fight against HIV in Australia, Early detection of the virus, in which HIV home test kits using rapid testing technology play a significant role. They allow for a fast and reliable HIV test to be taken by an individual without medical supervision. Access to these HIV rapid test kits greatly increase the penetration of HIV testing in a community. What is needed is a fresh look at HIV testing in at risk areas such as those frequented by drug users or prostitutes. Just as needle sharing is in part solved by supplying fresh needles, potentially ensuring that HIV positive drug users know their status can be a major factor in reducing its spread. If needle sharing programmes are supplement by HIV testing programmes using convenient tools such as HIV self test kits not only are we reducing potential exposure but we are giving those detected with HIV early, a better rate of survival from the HIV virus.
