Steve Doucette takes potholes personally. Balancing a tire at his Pictou County garage Thursday, he couldhave been mistaken for a rapper as he rhymed off the consequencesof broken pavement. "Struts, strut mounts, tires, wheel bearings, controlarms," he said. "Anything in the chassis that takes the brunt, breaks." But Doucette doesn"t listen to hip-hop. He fixes cars —the cars that regularly beat down the six roads within a 15-minutedrive that were voted into the top 10 in CAA Atlantic"s"worst roads" competition. About 3,200 votes were received from throughout Atlantic Canada andthe results were released Wednesday. Six Pictou County roads — Fox Brook Road, Mark Road,Marshdale Road, East River West Side Road, Elgin Road and RiverRoad — all made the top 10. Residents of Eureka and Hopewell didn"t seem surprised. "My pothole is famous — I saw it on television lastnight," Arthene Russell said as she packed a customer"sbag at the Village Variety in Hopewell. Talk between her and thecustomer quickly turned to which stretch of pavement brutalizescars the most. "It"s really pretty bad that our vehicles have to besubjugated so badly. ... It"s not actually funny, it"sactually expensive and dangerous." According to CAA Atlantic spokesman Gary Howard, the contest ismeant to encourage road improvement. "To the credit of our four provincial governments, of the top20 worst roads from 2011, 14 were repaired or are in the process ofbeing repaired," Howard said. "Your government is listening to you." A Transportation Department spokeswoman confirmed Thursday that allsix roads are scheduled for maintenance paving and River Road FZ,1,0,14 will also get a solid five kilometres of new pavement. She was not immediately able to confirm a schedule for the work, which is part of the department"s five-year plan. Larry Robinson knows the province"s pavement well. The safety inspector for Canada Post drives thousands of kilometreson rural roads checking on postal routes. After picking a slow route around a mudhole at the unpaved end ofElgin Road, Robinson said he"d seen worse roads butcouldn"t remember where. Back at Steve D"s Garage, Doucette pondered the underside ofan old pickup. "We see parts with five-year warranties that come back wornout after just eight months," he said. "It means a lot of work for us and the parts are warrantied, but the labour is an expense to the customer. Cars aren"tdesigned for this type of abuse. They"re automobiles, nottanks."
