If you're checking for water to get below a certain level, you may need to use the laser at a low angle and bounce it off of the surface of the water. It is necessary to do this because laser light can travel through water, in most cases, without any problem and with very little disturbance to the beam. On the other hand, when the laser beam hits the surface of the water at a low angle, it bounces off the surface. How can you use this to your advantage? You may want to set up the laser at a slight downward angle and have hit a sensor on the other side of the tank. As long as the laser is hitting the sensor, everything is fine. When the water level drops below the level of the beam, however, the beam will now bounce off of the surface of the water and move upward. That will break the connection between the laser and the sensor, alerting you to the problem. If you have things set up properly, you will either be notified of the fact that the water level is getting low or it will automatically fill the water back up to an acceptable level again. There are additional options available to help you to measure the water level effectively with the use of lasers. These include calculating the time that it takes for the beam to leave the laser and come back to the laser again. This takes a little bit more finesse and you certainly want to have the timing controlled properly. You may also be able to adjust the laser beam to near infrared, which may be able to break the beam what it travels through water. if you aren't able to use the surface of the water to bounce the beam at a slight angle, these may be worth testing.
