Just like desktop computers, the more popular a laptop is depends almost solely on the processor technology it comes equipped with. Yes, a good design, a nice graphics card, and a decent battery play a role as well, but these factors are nowhere near as important in deciding how good a laptop is as what type of processor it has. If you are looking to upgrade your laptop’s processing power, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, you should make sure that the processor you want will perform well in the specific programs you’ll be using on your laptop. For example, if you aren’t a big gamer and don’t intend on playing any type of computer game on your laptop, then it’s probably better if you don’t get a processor that was made specifically for computer gaming. You would just be spending money on power that you’re never actually going to utilize. In that situation, a basic processor would work just fine, and would be cheaper. You should also pay attention to the features that each type of processor offers, such as the number of cores it has, its bus speed, cache memory, and chip speed. When it comes to laptops, there are really only two main commercially available processor manufacturers around. These are AMD and Intel, which I’m sure you’ve heard of. Both manufacturers make power processors. I will focus on Intel’s iSeries of processors and AMD’s Athlon series of processors. Intel Core i3 Mobile Processor This processor is the most basic of the iSeries of Intel processors. It is a dual core processor featuring a four thread count. Its clock speed can reach up to 2.5GHz, and it offer 3MB of cache space. While this is the most basic processor in the series, it still offers fast performance for your laptop. Intel Core i5 Mobile Processor This is a dual core processor with a 2.6GHz clock speed and 3MB of cache space. This processor offers Turbo Boost 2.0 as well as hyper threading technology. Intel Core i7 Mobile Processor This processor is the most powerful of the iSeries processors previously mentioned. It is a quad core processor with a 2GHz per-core clock speed. It also offers 6MB of cache space as well as boosted performance. AMD Mobile Athlon This is a low budget processor. While it is fairly inexpensive, it still offers an exceptionally reliable performance. AMD Mobil Athlon XP-M The processor is an improved version of the AMD Mobile Athlon processor. It offers double the cache memory space as its predecessor, and is still fairly inexpensive. This processor also tends to perform better than Intel’s Pentium series of laptop processors, which is something to keep in mind when looking at what type of processor to get for your laptop. When looking to upgrade your laptop’s processor, it is important to keep in mind what type of programs you will be running with the processor. Make sure you get a processor that makes sense to your needs. That way you won’t be paying for power that you won’t ever use.
