For most of us, making some extra money, after retirement, will enable us to do enjoyable things that we cannot otherwise afford to. However, if you are like me, you will frown and wonder what you can do, now that you are over 55 and retired from work. Chatting with my friend Ellie who has been working from home since she resigned from work to raise her kids, I realized that there are lots of opportunities that we can make use of. To begin with, there are many small businesses or even medium and large scale organizations that are heavily dependent on outsourced freelancers. This means, we can easily secure a job as a freelancing, telecommuting employee or a service provider. Here are some great options that you can consider when it comes to earning money after retirement. - Consider Selling Handcrafted Items – You may think you don’t have the talent for it, but give it a try. For example, pottery painting is a great stress reliever and, if you are good, may bring in some money. If no money comes in, you can still enjoy yourself and keep yourself occupied. Then there is knitting which many of us are quite good at. What’s stopping you from knitting a pair of booties, baby blankets and hats and selling them? You can sell them from home or do so whenever there are local craft shows in your area. Hand crafted stationary, cushions and crochet lace items etc. are all among possibilities.
- Sell Baked Goodies – If you have the knack for baking, and love to bake things, why not make some cakes and puddings and other desserts and sell them? This can grow to become a thriving business! If you ask around, you may be able to sell your wares through restaurants and other local shops. This could bring in quite a bit of money. Or, you can even open an online store. Creating a website is no longer a costly affair and you will soon enjoy some online sales orders.
- Babysit – Many young people will jump at the chance to have an older, mature person babysit their children. You are more responsible, more experienced and more reliable than 16 and 17 year old babysitters. Sometimes, though looking after children can be strenuous and exhausting. So, consider offering your services only for an hour or two, two or three days of the week.
- Offer your Experience for Money – What did you do before retirement? Were you a manager in an accounting firm? Did you work in a legal office? There are many people who would be quite enthusiastic about obtaining accounting help and legal advice from someone with your experience. This can be extremely profitable, and you can work on your own time, which to me, is the best news.
- Sell Home Grown Produce – If you love puttering about in the garden and have the “green thumb”, you just may be able to grow some carrots or lettuce and sell your produce. You’ll be surprised at the number of people who pay for organic produce.
- Pet Sit – There are many working adults who do not have time to walk their dogs or groom them during the week day. If you are a dog lover, you can offer to pet sit or walk the dogs and get some extra cash. As with babysitting, you should make sure this is not too much for you.
There are a host of other interesting and enjoyable money-making ventures out there. Retirement should not mean you have lost the ability to earn some extra money.
