Toddlers for their underdeveloped or sensitive immune system are more prone to adverse drug reactions than adults. So, it requires proper understanding of the chemical composition of drugs before toddlers are put on a dose of any prescription. There are certain medications that are prohibited for children in the age group of 12 to 24 months. In case they ingest such medications, immediate medical advice should be sought. Here are 4 medicines that should never be given to toddlers. 1. Anti-nausea drugs The least recommended drug for children is anti-nausea drugs, unless prescribed by a pediatrician. There are numerous occasions of a child consuming some foreign substance that results in vomiting bouts. Generally, most of such bouts are short-lived and subside on their own. But, if your child’s condition refuses to improve and he/she suffers from serious dehydration as a result, you should consult a physician immediately. 2. Aspirin based medicines For anyone 19 year old or younger, aspirin or any medication containing aspirin salt is a strict no-no. Doses of aspirin in any quantity can make a child susceptible to fatal diseases such Reye’s syndrome (affects organs that harm the brain and the liver). One should always read labels carefully for the ingredients of the medicines before giving them to children. If you’re not sure about the components of the medications, it is advisable to seek a doctor’s approval before administering doses of the same. 3. Ipecac Syrups The particular syrup is historically known to be beneficial in situations where a child accidently swallows some poisonous substance. The drug causes vomiting and helps in throwing out the ingested substance that can prevent poisoning. But, as per some studies by the American Academy of Pediatrics, use of syrups of ipecac does more harm than good. There is no clear evidence that vomiting helps in removal of poisonous substances from the body of the child. In some cases, excessive vomiting may lead to chronic dehydration and worsen the condition of the child. 4. Chew-able tablets There are a number of chew-able tablets available in the market. But, a child with restricted swallowing capacity and small esophagus diameter can choke himself easily with these chewable tablets. So, if your child still needs them, crush them down and serve them mixed with yogurt or milk. But, here again take advice from a doctor because certain medications can react with milk and milk products and produce adverse affects. Additionally, there are many cases when parents treat their toddlers with the same medicines prescribed to them. It should be noted here that most of the drugs prescribed for adults are ineffective with toddlers, or at times too harsh for their sensitive systems to react properly. Also, you should discourage the use of expired medicines for they can develop serious complications with the sensitive immune system of the toddlers. Always purchase drugs with expiry date clearly mentioned on them. Toddlers are in a habit to get attracted to curious items at home and therefore, keep all drugs/syrups out of their reach.
