The maxi dress is one of summer’s most versatile styles, and this year, it’s available in a whole new range of innovating and fashion-forward styles, some of which add a whole new meaning to the term ‘maxi dress’. The Beach Maxi Let's start with the stereotypical, super comfortable beach maxi dress, with its flowing skirt, stretchy waistband and gorgeous Bo-ho chic summer design. This type of maxi is still the most popular type, with women snapping them up for holidays, days on the beach, and simply dosing in the garden on sunny days. They’re also the garment-of-choice for pregnant ladies, too, because they’re so comfy, and can be teamed with a cardigan on windier days. The Evening Maxi I for one am not convinced that 'evening maxis' as they are so called should be identified as maxis. I mean, they're a completely different style of dress! So what if it has the same maxi-style skirt, short sleeves and stretch-material back, the maxi is a typically informal style of dress, while this ... this is more like a formal evening gown. They come in such an array of beautiful colours, too; rich purples, deep reds, royal blues, and most of them come complete with sparkling sequins and glistening diamantes. While they may not be good for in the day, they're perfect for evening parties. The Vest Maxi Basically, this kind of maxi is a vest that's been stretched and stretched and stretched, until the bottom part of it resembles a long skirt. It's a good idea but, again: why is being called a maxi dress? Either way, it is, and it can be worn like a typical maxi at the beach, or (as a lot of people I've seen are doing), with a pair of trainers and a denim jacket in the day. They come in some nice colours, too, plain greens, whites and blacks that go with most thing, as well as vibrant tie-dye patterns and colour gradients. The Halter-neck and One Shoulder Maxi Halter neck tops were huge in the noughties (just look at every Atomic Kitten video), and they look set to be making a comeback with loads of them being introduced onto the fashion market this year. They're pretty much the same as the typical maxi (same skirt, same top, etc.) but they have a halter neck. Another noughties fashion that's returned this year and is being incorporated into maxi dress designs is the one-shoulder look. The long-sleeved maxi Apparently the maxi got fed-up of being locked in a cupboard for the majority of year, because it’s reinvented itself now with long-sleeves. To me, this isn’t a true maxi: the shape of it (especially the cut out around the hips) suggests it’s more of a very long printed-midi. I’m assuming that the only reason it’s called a maxi dress is because the skirt reaches the floor. Either way, I do like this style of dress, and while I’m not convinced it’d be good in winter (surely your ankles would still get cold), it’ll definitely be good for those less sunny days when it’s good to cover up a little bit.
