Dean puts exclamation point on illinois boys' classic win

Business,Business News,Business Opportunities
By FRANK CASH Herald-Whig Sports Writer The exclamation point on the Illinois boys' 93-82 victory inSaturday night's 29th Annual McDonald's/Herald-Whig Classic wasrather run of the mill. Nothing flashy. Nothing out of DeAngelo Dean's character. Just a simple two-handed slam dunk off a pass from Payson Seymour'sAaron Edwards with 54 seconds left to assure Illinois of its 27thvictory in the series dating back to 1984. "It was pretty good.

It felt good," said Dean, a Quincy High Schoolgraduate. "I got the pass, and I had room (for the dunk)." Dean's second celebratory dunk wasn't as smooth. On the nextpossession, he was called for a technical for hanging on the rimtoo long. "That was a little embarrassing," said Dean, Illinois' mostvaluable player with 29 points and 12 rebounds.

There was nothing embarrassing about Illinois' effort. In a game that featured several Missouri rallies, Illinois clung toa 72-71 lead after Logan Hicks of Hannibal drove the left baselinewith 5 minutes, 18 seconds left in the game. Starting with a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Dalton Hooverof Pittsfield, Illinois answered with a 13-5 run, eventually takingan 85-76 lead when Edwards drove the lane for a basket with 1:27left. That was the final burst Illinois needed.

"Missouri kept it interesting," said Illinois coach Andy Douglas ofLiberty. "It was competitive all the way through. I think our guysmade up their minds they weren't going to let it get away. Theywanted to put it away." Illinois played only eight players.

Clayton Myers ofGriggsville-Perry was still mending a finger injury suffered duringbaseball season, and Evan McGaughey of Illini West tweaked a kneeduring practice earlier in the week. It turned out to be a non-factor for Illinois. "I think most of us knew we'd have to be out on the floor a littlelonger than usual," said Edwards, who had 19 points and nineassists. "Everyone did a great job filling in where they needed to.All of these players are all-stars for their high school teams. Some of them had to be role players tonight, but they didn'tcomplain." An 18-3 run late in the first half helped Illinois pull out to a46-29 lead when Jared Shover of Liberty made two free throws with43.3 seconds left before halftime. Missouri wasn't about to give up.

Opening the second half byscoring 14 straight points, Missouri tied the score at 46 whenMichael Shivers of Hannibal drained a 3-pointer from the leftcorner just 2:20 into the half. "We came out ready," said Shivers, Missouri's MVP with 24 pointsand three 3-pointers. "We weren't going to let it be easy for(Illinois). We played well together.

All of us Hannibal guys got toplay together a lot, but a lot of others stepped up for big nightsas well." Missouri stayed within three points of Illinois until Shivers madeanother three from the left wing for his team's first lead at 55-54with 11:40 left. Six lead changes followed before Illinois took thelead for good at 66-64 on Dean's three-point play with 8:54 left. Late in the game, Missouri didn't have as many answers as it didearlier. "We knew coming in, we had to knock down some shots from outside tohave a chance because (Illinois) had a definite size advantage,"said Missouri coach Matt Pugh of Hannibal. "And we got a lot ofgood looks.

Illinois had a lot of tough matchups, but we had guysstep up big in those situations." Like J.J. Chatfield's work on Dean. "Here's a kid from little bitty Philadelphia, Mo., Class 1 MarionCounty, and he did a monster job on Dean," Pugh said. "Same thingwith (Palmyra's) Blayne White.

They kept making plays." Just not enough to snap Illinois' superiority in the series. "(Douglas) told me I would have the ball in my hands a lottonight," Edwards said. "And that was fine. I wasn't about to be onthe third Illinois team to lose in this game. I wanted to doeverything I could to make sure we won." -- sports@whig.com/221-3365.
