Chillers are machines used to provide reduced temperatures as required in industries, cooling of buildings and in refrigeration of food and medicines. The chiller removes heat from a liquid through a refrigeration cycle of vapor-compression and absorption. The cooled liquid or refrigerant namely Freon is circulated via a heat exchanger to cool the surrounding air or any machinery, equipment etc. in the application. The waste heat so produced maybe used for heating purposes also or exhausted. As maintaining a low temperature is the sole criteria, the design and maintenance are important to improve efficiencies. Air cooled scroll chillers work at high temperature ranges and help cool large buildings like malls and offices besides industrial establishments. They work reliably in tough summer conditions even at a high ambient temperature of 45 degrees Celsius. To work at subzero temperature conditions the chillers are installed with anti-freezing elements. The chiller serves heat recovery and thermal storage applications and comes in multiple compressor configurations. They feature a hermetic scroll compressor, air-cooled condenser and microprocessor based control panel. They are rugged and can be installed outdoors on the ground or on roof tops. Water-cooled scroll chillers are highly efficient and require cooling towers which help enhance thermodynamic effectiveness. These are suitable for indoor installation and operation and the cooling is effected by a condenser water loop which can be connected to outdoor cooling towers to dissipate the heat. Another type of chiller is the evaporative cooled chiller. Its efficiency level falls between that of air-cooled chillers and water-cooled chillers. These use a mist of water over the condenser coil to cool the condenser. This increases efficiency and does not need a remote cooling tower. In industries, chillers can be centralized where one chiller serves multiple needs or decentralized where each application uses a separate chiller. It is installed as a complete, packaged, closed-loop system with chiller unit, condenser, and pump station with recalculating pump, expansion valve and cold water control. The water from the chiller travels to the place that needs to be cooled and comes back. In the plastic industry scroll chillers provide cooling for injection and blow molding. Metal working cutting oils, welding equipment, die-casting and machine tooling, chemical processing and pharmaceutical formulation require cooling. Chillers provide cooling for cold storage of food and also in food and beverage processing. In medicine, they help cool high-heat producing equipments like MRI machines and lasers.
