A child's biggest health advocate is his or her parent(s). However, there are significant differences between the basic milestones that a child achieves from birth to 24 and 36 months of age. Paying attention to a child's progress can be a great way to determine when to ask for additional evaluation from a pediatrician who will then recommend a professional hearing test for him or her based on their examination results. According to The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, audiologists, ear, nose and throat specialists, and pediatrician experience, there are certain responses that are congruent to the age groups of a child's development from birth to toddlerhood. Up to three months, the child should be able to be soothed, turns when spoken to or hears a familiar sound, or is startled by unfamiliar or loud noises. Up to six months, the child begins to make sounds at different tones, likes the sound of noisy toys, responds to no's by obeying or crying, but it's still a response. Up to ten months old, he or she should begin to use different simple words that they use each day such as their favorite toy, fruit, or saying bye-bye or night-night. Up to fifteen months, the child should remember and play different games, sing-a-longs, follow commands, and remember familiar objects and people. Up to eighteen months, he or she should be exploring their voice even more by using the words that they've learned. Up to twenty-four months, he or she can answer questions yes or no, can follow simple instructions, recognizes pictures and begins to like books. And lastly, up to thirty-six months, the toddler can follow actions and more steps to commands, such as getting their shoes and waiting for their shoes to be tied and putting on their coat before going outside. But when a child is dealing with auditory decline or lack of function, they may be stunted or fall behind their average peers.
