It is not a traditional birthday present. In fact, it could be called the worst present ever given. At the urging of grandma, when grandpa turned 80 the family chipped in and bought him a hearing aid. What is the expression about teaching an old dog new tricks? He didn't appreciate the gift. When we visited for Thanksgiving a couple of months later there was no sign of the hearing aid. When we called the house he continued to ask "what" a lot or sometimes not even hear the phone ringing. Then Christmas came along and indeed a Christmas miracle took place. We knocked on the door Christmas Eve and grandpa rushed to greet us. He had a giant smile on his face. In his left ear was the hearing aid we had bought. He didn't say anything about it. We wouldn't dare mention it. As we sat around the tree telling stories and drinking eggnog it was the most comfortable family evening anybody could remember. Everyone was in good spirits, communication was clear and easy, there was even talk of a snow filled family football game on New Years Day. When we woke up in the morning Santa Claus once again had eaten the cookies that were left out and presents were strewn all over the floor. As we began to open them, something a little bit out of the ordinary occurred. Grandpa, with his hearing aid in place, seemed almost drunk with excitement. He was giddy like an eight year old. I opened my first present; it was a DVD of my favorite musical. My brother got 10 downloads for his digital music player. My parents were the big winners; they received a satellite radio system for the car. He bought grandma two tickets to a concert for a group that they had seen years ago, and then he made an announcement. Grandpa, a retired traveling salesman, told us that all of the gifts were audible in nature because while he recognized that he was stubborn, we had given him the gift of enjoying his favorite movies, bands, and TV shows again. The hearing aid was something that he felt made him seem old, but once he tried it the result was life changing. We reminded him that he spent his days around family and friends and there was no reason to be self-conscious. We hoped that he would live a long, happy, productive, and healthy life. He told us individually that he was planning to watch the musical with me, listen to new bands with my brother, go on a road trip with my parents, and of course attend the concert with grandma. He really proved the point that sometimes you are your own greatest obstacle.
