Orators of old used dramatic gestures and voice fluctuation to gain the attention of the audience. Today public speakers utilize the latest in interactive LCD display, audience response systems, and document cameras. With these technological advances, many presenters find it easier and easier to educate an audience and create a mutual understand of the message. Many corporate presenters utilize the interactive LCD displays to generate colorful explanation of business information such as graphs and charts. These interactive whiteboards also grab attention during training sessions and in academia. Audience response systems are ideal for education as a room can be polled for answers in classroom quizzes, homework, or questions that impact grading of each student. These methods eliminate group think among younger students and allow a clear presentation of who understands or can call up memory of coursework. Document cameras also offer boundless opportunity in education and training as any small item or document can immediately be larger than life on an overhead screen. Document cameras are able to inform a crowded room about the small details of a leaf, for example, for a visual aesthetic learning tool. In addition to the implementation of these technological advances, public speakers today need to be aware of the diminishing length of attention span. An average listener can focus for only seven to ten minutes, according to media training websites. If short breaks are utilized, then after every break the audience is refreshed and can take in another seven to ten minutes of information. Tricks of the presentation trade are to mix up the presentation by use of technology or interaction among the group. This works by changing the presentation after every seven minutes to include an audience response system question or small group brainstorming discussion. Public speaking techniques that also further engage an audience beyond seven minutes include intriguing stories, moving to another position or location in the room intermittently (not nervously), or asking discussion questions including polling by raising of hands. Moving on to a different topic can also awaken a crowd to absorb additional information, although not for a long period. Perhaps the most used technology in presentations is a power point presentation. In order to make power point effective certain strategies are used to get the most bang for the buck. Firstly, limit the number of words on each slide. Make certain the font is large enough and clear enough to be readable from all locations in the room. The use of color only for high impact, black letters on a yellow screen is the easiest on the eyes. Careful layout with use of white space is another easy on the eyes trick of the trade. Consistency is key in making a presentation flow. The use of technology especial with any interactive device such as the audience response system or interactive LCD display makes your presentation an eye catching and memorable event rather than another boring meeting.
