Going to the doctor is not most people's favorite activity. Because my family has a few doctors in it, at functions with all of our aunts and uncles sometimes we debate the "best of the worst" in terms of having to see a medical professional. I personally hate going to the eye doctor. I get a queasy feeling when they dilate my eyes. My cousin Tim hates the basic physical. He finds check-ups to be invasive. The women in our family greatly dislike trips to the OBGYN. They recognize the need to get looked at, but feel as though certain things that are supposed to be private are somewhat less than that at the OB. Our general conclusion seems to be dealing with ears and hearing provides the best experience among doctors. Because my aunt Jill is an ear, nose, and throat doctor she relishes the fact that we deem her to be in the ideal part of the industry. It is really simple why we feel that way. Taking a hearing test is easy. You simply raise your hand when the tone is audible. When the doctor looks into your ear it does not hurt and unless you really dig, there are no nerves to create discomfort. On the rare occasion that wax builds up in your ear, there is a vacuum type machine that clears out the ear and actually provides relief. It is kind of like taking your ear to the car wash. Of course ringing in the ear or loss of hearing are major issues, but you can have a serious problem no matter what type of doctor you see and Jill's profession seems like the best of the worst. I should know. As a little kid I took a hearing test at school and while there were no conclusive results that I had a problem, it was determined I should see an expert. Jill gladly found time to see me and conducted her own hearing test. It found that my left ear was clogged up. She easily was able to alleviate this problem in short order. In the coming years I got a few different ear infections. Again, she was able to prescribe antibiotics to fix the problem. One time I experienced ringing in my ear and again using medicine she eliminated this problem. Obviously I never had a major issue, but being able to address small problems without major pain or awful procedures that take time and money makes for a reasonably pleasant experience. Jill always recommended to the entire family that getting a hearing test on a regular basis is a great way to make sure everything is ok and avoid larger problems down the road.
