Debunking Acne Treatment Myths

Health
People have heard and been told lots of things that are untrue, and this doesn't exclude the myths that have been sticking around regarding acne treatment. It can be easy to want to believe all the easy remedies for pimples that one hears, especially because having zits and other blemishes on the face is distressing for many teens and adults. Here are some of the myths about acne treatment that have persisted.

1. Scrubbing your skin every day is a good way to get rid of dirt and oils that cause pimples. False. Many people like to scrub with abrasive cleansers until they get a "squeaky clean" feeling. This can actually harm your face. Blemishes are often inflamed and scrubbing can lead to more inflammation, making your face look worse. Washing the face too much can dry out the skin, which will produce more oils to balance out the vigorous scrubbing it's getting everyday. More oils will lead to more need for acne treatment.

2. The more medication you slather on your face, the better. Probably not. Too often people hoping for clearer skin will use anything and everything that they can find in the drugstore to try to treat the blemishes on their own. Be careful not to overload on products. Some people find that when they stop using products altogether their skin clears up. This is because products that are designed to treat acne are often very effective at clearing oil from the face. To do this though, the product must often be harsh. Try washing with just water or with just a gentle cleanser and see if that doesn't help a bit.

3. Popping pimples makes them go away faster. Not even. Though the pimple will be immediately less noticeable after it is popped, that zit is going to stay around longer now that it's been popped. When squeezing and prodding, bacteria from the pimple is forced back further into your skin. This makes the inflammation worse, which makes the pimple stay around longer, look more red, and be bigger than if it had just gone away on its own. This can also lead to the kind of acne scars that stick around forever. Pits and dents in the face cause by acne often only go away with cosmetic procedures like injectable dermal fillers.

4. The sun is an all natural acne treatment. Kinda. Especially when the skin on the back or other part of the body is what is concerning, spending up to 20 minutes in the sun each day could help skin clear up. This comes with a caveat, however. Too much exposure will have the opposite effect. Skin can become damaged by the sun and those same bumps can come back as the skin heals itself. Just like washing everyday, over exposure to the sun will dry the skin.
