For those individuals who do not know it, Jeddah is a shopper's nirvana! Reputed to have over ninety shopping centers ( or "malls", as they appear to be generally known ), with new locations now under assembly, it's a popular destination for Saudis and expats alike, in addition to the uncountable millions of travelers arriving in the town every year to go to visit Mecca. A busy commercial centre found on the Red Sea coast, Jeddah includes a population of roughly 3.2 million. It is not surprising, then, that shopping is so well-liked in a place where theatres, theatres and discotheques have no place. From loaded designer products to everyday highest stores (and everything in-between), Jeddah has it all! With so much retail choice nonetheless; it can be tricky to know precisely where to go for the best shopping experience. Naturally, having only lived in the town for 8 months, I continue to have some way to go before I can lay claim to have visited even a big proportion of Jeddah's malls. But I am actually doing my best to fit as much "exploring" as I am able to into my tight timetable and I want to share my familiarity with you. 2 of the largest shopping centers are the Red Sea Mall and the Mall of Arabia, the second being one of my faves. To offer you an idea of their size, let's simply say the Red Sea Mall has eighteen entrances, four thousand parking spots and 3 floors of shops, diners and entertainment facilities, as well as a 5-star hotel and 7-storey office building attached to it. My fave stores here are the Virgin Megastore and the Danube hypermarket that has a great choice of non-food items as well as a reasonable range of global foods on offer. The Mall of Arabia, in the meantime, is Jeddah's biggest mall with 330 stores and 3 floors of shops, diners and entertainment facilities including a skating rink. Being one of the more modern developments, it is modern and light and straightforward to find a way around due to its circular design. It is also the base for a couple of my favorite shops ,e.g. Boots the Chemist ( the only one I know of in Jeddah ), Ziddy ( children clothing ), Residual ( adults and youngsters big label clothes from Spain ) and Opening Youngsters . Being so massive, both these shopping centers have the edge of remaining open between one P.M. And five P.M. (most shops in Saudi Arabia being closed between these times ). It is right to say nonetheless, that only the bigger stores inside these centers will remain open in this time, the little ones reopening at five P.M. On a smaller scale, Stars Avenue is a superb discovery only 5 minutes away from our home. While a considerable number of its stores are a little out of my price bracket (Saks 5th Avenue, for one), it has one or two decent-priced stores like Mango and New Look and lately opened a new branch of Manuel, one of my fave shops that has an excellent choice of imported Western European foods. Goodies, the Lebanese chain of eateries / delicatessens, also merit a special mention for its quality food at fair prices, as does Tiny Book for its choice of English-language children's books.
