A second trimester abortion is quite common. This type of abortion only takes place for the management of miscarriage, discovered fetal anomalies or conditions that pertain to mental health. The second trimester of a pregnancy takes place during 15 to 28 weeks once a woman has missed her last menstrual cycle. For this type of abortion, this process usually take two day to successfully complete and not require an overnight hospital stay. This process is commonly referred to as D and E or dilation and evacuation. Two Day Process During this two day process, several events will take place. During the first day, this will be your awareness day. You will speak with your healthcare professional and discuss the entire second trimester abortion process in specific detail. You will learn about the medical instruments that will be used and the medications (if any) that will be used. You will be made aware of what to expect during the procedure and after the procedure. This visit for the first day will last 2 to 3 hours. During the second visit, the procedure will take place. You will meet your physician at the designated hospital and wait for further instructions. This particular visit usually lasts for 4 to 5 hours. For women who are 18 weeks pregnant or less, this is typically a procedure that can be performed within one day. The Procedure When your physician is ready to perform this procedure, your cervix will be softened. Cervix softening and dilation is performed by administering medication and the use of laminaria. Laminaria, which is also referred to as Dilapan are tiny dilating sticks that are created from a special form of seaweed that widens during the absorption process. This type of seaweed absorbs moisture from within your body. The Dilapn sticks will remain in your body overnight to prepare your body for the process that will soon take place. Recovery Once the procedure has been completed successfully, you will remain in the recovery room for 2 to 3 hours. During this time, your physician and nurses will monitor your recovery status. If everything goes well, you will be sent home to rest and prescribed antibiotics that will help prevent infection. Because of the type of medications that will be prescribed, you will need a designated driver to make sure that you return home safely. You will need to make sure that you have everything scheduled and planned out before this procedure is done. Second Trimester Abortion.
