The question should be thrown straight to your tutor, or a researcher, or both. Or, if you’re the timid type, you can approach a friend, or colleague whom you know is good at research and putting that research unto paper.
In case you fail to find or ask these mentioned people, you can take your curious eyes down there, over those collated variables:
- References. For higher education courseworks, reference is king. You could, therefore, say that the research essay is the kingdom by which the king (references) dwells. In context, a well-written research piece will always have to have prevalent references (as kings do dominate).
Take keen note that simply looking for references won’t settle the score; references will have to be appraised to such extent that an essay will only have the best accessible references for the given topic. Another crucial point about references is the necessity of properly applying the approved referencing style. This translates to both reference lists or works cited page, as well as, direct or paraphrased quotations.
- Substance. Putting substance in this kind of coursework can be difficult. With the number of references added on each paragraph, students hardly find something new to say or rather, write. However, making sense out of the menagerie of references adds value and is, therefore, a basis for calling that written work ‘well-written.’
- Order. A logical arrangement is a necessary thing for every coursework and the research essay is no exception. This arrangement can be made through sequential order (i.e., dates, events), or any other useful order.
To ensure that an arrangement is rightly implemented in composition, students should always start with creating an outline. Upon finding relevant references, they may immediately put each in its corresponding sub-heading, just as well as, their own inputs.
- Methodology. Because the piece is expected to contain so much data, it is necessary to put up an approach or method through which data is processed. Furthermore, students cannot rely from simply selecting a method; rather, they are encouraged to present the details describing the rationale behind the selected method.
Putting such details may actually be too tricky as doing so usually exposes a bit more (i.e., vulnerability) and is, in nature, an uncomfortable task. On the other hand, such measure puts sufficient (and sometimes, too much) pressure for students to really look and, inevitably, commit unto their methodology.
Acknowledging these variables may only do half the job; actually integrating each variable on students’ research essay involves a different level of effort. However, recognising these variables is the first right step towards a successful composition. Knowledge seldom fails to add guidance in the picture, even in the context of writing.
