SANAA, May 7 -- Yemen plans to expand the Aden Port, which hasdeteriorated in recent years despite the deal with DP World, theUnited Arab Emirates' marine terminal operator, a TransportMinistry official told Xinhua on Monday. The new Yemeni government represented by the Transport Ministry hasalready started practical steps to reconsider the deal which wassigned in 2008 with DP World to develop and run the port. "Tenders will be announced in the future to select a company toexpand the wharf of the port and the government will be responsiblefor this expansion," a senior official of the Transport Ministrysaid anonymously. In late April, the Yemeni official SABA news agency reported thatTransport Minister Waed Bathib had discussed with the South KoreanHyundai Company possible investments in Yemen including theexpansion of the wharf of Aden Port, development of the Hodeida andMukalla ports and the construction of the Socotra port. The Socotraport will be financed by Kuwait. In the meantime, the ministry is working hard to end a strike bythe workers, which has closed the Aden Port for more than twoweeks, the official said. On Friday, Bathib criticized the striking workers, saying even iftheir demands were right they should not halt all operations andclose the port. "The government will not be silent toward theclosure of this key port because it has affected the whole country," the minister said in a statement. The workers are demanding DP World to improve their work conditionsincluding a pay rise after the workers at other ports it runs inthe world. Yemen pins hope on this port which economic studies have suggestedit can bring in tens of billions of U.S. dollars a year if it isdeveloped and run well. The Aden Port, once one of the most important terminals in theworld, is the main port in the country through which most of localproducts are exported. Besides the bad management, maritime piracy, which has recentlysoared, is one of the key factors affecting this port. Somali pirates have spread along the Gulf of Aden threatening oneof the busiest waterways in the world. Piracy has largely affected the activity at this port, with manyships redirected to Oman and other regional countries, officialsand experts said. But they did not give a specific percentage ofthe piracy impact.
