The profit margins for standard BOPP films have continued to decrease and lots of BOPP manufacturers are looking to move into added-value films. New packaging solutions for the general market trend are believed to be sustainability, cost reduction, longer shelf life, substitution of aluminum foil and replacement of lamination steps. Facilitate transparent barrier film products also contributed to the popularity of their use.
BOPP plain films - sequentially or simultaneously orientation?
The types of film which grows fastest are EVOH and SiOx coated film structures. Whereas SiOx and AlOx coatings are offline converting processes, the use of EVOH allows the implementation of a barrier function integrated in the film orientation process.
Assessment scale pilot production line is based on different levels of different ethylene content EVOH values. The proportion of the ethylene content will have a significant impact on tensile properties as well as the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) block result. Typically, high ethylene content gives better orientability, but on the other hand will lead to a lower OTR of barrier properties. The results also depend on the available grade of EVOH sequential stretching process applicability.
According to our assessment, standard EVOH grades with ethylene contents of 48% and above, a modified grade with 44% ethylene as well as modified grades with 38% ethylene can be biaxially stretched in the sequential mode with excellent optics and OTR values.
Recently, in order for the thin EVOH barrier EVOH layer BOPP film thickness within the range of 3-4 microns OTR value of 10 cm3/m2 day bar, which meet many packaging applications for these products, such as sealing membrane barrier tray. As an alternative, a new order in BOPP production line investment in upgrading an existing serial line 7-layer structure is very technically and economically feasible. In particular by modifying a small working width for a particular purpose lines to provide customers with the following benefits: increased production of new products of the most developed resin (such as modified EVOH), the highest grade of the film has a special recipe, ready to compete ability to produce in the future market.
On the other hand, the earlier produced simultaneous BOPP plain film using EVOH grades from Kuraray with low contents of ethylene - even down to 24% - gave the best barrier values, down to 1.4 cm3/m2 day bar and therefore allowed the thinnest EVOH layers (approx.1 micron in the final film), saving barrier material.
