The Annual Carolina Renaissance Festival From the beginning to October till the end of November the 16th century comes to the Lake Norman area at the annual Carolina Renaissance Festival & Artisan Marketplace. This year will be the 20th annual season, and there's a lot to do on the twenty acres of festival grounds. This is one of the most well-known Renaissance fairs in the country, and it's also grown to be one of the largest. There are over 100 purveyors of food, drink, and crafts, and the stage always has either musical or comedy acts ready to entertain. If you want to get dressed up for this fair you won't be the only person in costume, there are over 500 costumed actors who will be on the grounds to entertain visitors. Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Lock Norman Highland Games When people come to North Carolina they probably don't expect to see a celebration of Scottish culture, but the Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Lock Norman Highland Games has been going on strong for nearly 20 years. Rural Hill is a 265 acre historic site that houses a working farm, center for education, and a place for event destination. Rural Hill used to belong to Major John and Violet Wilson Davidson when they purchased the property in 1760, but it's now owned and operated by Historic Rural Hill, Inc. and is part of the Mecklenburg Country Parks and Recreation system. Rural Hill holds its Scottish culture celebration in April, but there's always something happening in area throughout the year. Queens Landing If you want to enjoy the outdoors and get a chance to sail on Lake Norman, you need to sign up for a cruise with Queen's Landing. They have different ships available for cruises depending on your tastes. The Catawba Queen is great for people who want to go on a simple sightseeing cruise, and the Lady of the Lake would be perfect for people who want to host special functions like corporate events and weddings. There's also a restaurant and amusement park near-by that you can visit once you're finished on the cruise, or you could just spend your day there enjoying the sites.
