Getting a good vantage to enjoy the stunning views of the Caribbean, especially if you’re scouting for a backdrop for the perfect Caribbean wedding you have in mind, is often a matter of hiking or driving up a cliff on any of the islands in the region. And although there are many contenders for the ‘best views in the Caribbean’ throne, we believe the following destinations beat all others. The Pitons Obviously, a list like this would not be credible unless it included the two famous peaks on St Lucia, the Pitons. In fact, many a Caribbean wedding has been consecrated against this magnificent, breathtaking backdrop. Popular among mountain climbers and adventurous hikers, the Pitons (the taller one is called Gros Piton and, logically, the smaller one is Petit Piton) have always been considered as the dramatic trump card. The slopes are steep and, consequently, only experienced hikers or climbers can negotiate its upper reaches; but for those whose stay on St Lucia is romantic in nature, the two peaks can provide an elegant, yet truly awe-inspiring background to your exchange of marital vows. Rick’s Cafe Perched atop a cliff that provides an enviable, breathtaking panorama of the surrounding ocean and lush, green coastline, Rick’s Cafe is more about the location than about the cafe itself. Many, however, may be compelled to argue that the cafe is the ‘be all and end all’ of the whole experience, and it is indeed a respected institution in this part of Jamaica. A great way to cap a romantic Caribbean wedding is to drive to Rick’s at sunset for photographs. The sight of the setting sun from this spot is apparently so exciting that it is usual for the crowd to actually give it a round of applause. Located in central Negril, in Jamaica, along the West End Road, the cafe first opened for business almost 40 years ago - back in that distant halcyon time when opening a cafe in a sleepy fishing village such as Negril seemed counter to common sense! Yet, the cafe has persevered, and succeeded, thanks to its unique, laidback ambiance, despite the usual daily flock of tourists. Shirley Heights If you've chosen Antigua as the ‘Ground Zero’ of your perfect Caribbean wedding, your stay would not be complete without paying a visit to Shirley Heights. There are few other places in the region that can provide such panoramic views. Perched over the English and Falmouth Harbours, this vantage point allows you to enjoy the sights of neighbouring islands of Guadalupe and Montserrat. And, like Rick’s Cafe, Shirley Heights is also a must-visit at sunset: there is something beguiling about the sun setting over the Caribbean. Cheryl Matthews works for the Essential Hotel Collection.
