If you’re considering villas in Sicily as your holiday base, you might want to think about trying some of the unique dishes the island has to offer. Contrary to what you might imagine, the island doesn’t just offer an extension of Italian mainland cuisine. Snapper in a sugar and vinegar sauce, plus more… Although it’s probably true to say that fish is neither as plentiful nor as cheap as it once was anywhere in the Mediterranean, this Sicilian delicacy is delicious and a must to try for anyone on holiday staying in one of the villas in Sicily. If you like fish, you should also try the grilled swordfish, which sounds basic but the islanders somehow manage to impart a unique flavour to it. You could also try fennel with sardines – it may sound an unlikely combination but on a warm Sicilian evening it’s stunningly good. The local cuttlefish cooked in their own sauce served with pasta is also worth going out of your way for if you find a local restaurant that prepares it to perfection. Many people take on the challenge of purchasing some seafood from the local market and preparing it themselves in their villas in Sicily. Lamb and goat It’s not well-known that chicken and beef are ‘relatively’ new to the Mediterranean diet, which traditionally looked to lamb and goat for its meat. Today, Sicilian cuisine still uses lamb and goat in various local dishes, including the lip-licking masala sauce. These dishes can’t really be described; you just have to eat them! Incidentally, some meat dishes on the island use what it sometimes called offal – including the spleen. Before you throw up your hands in horror, remember that in the UK offal is also eaten traditionally in Scotland (haggis), or in England in things such as steak and kidney pie or faggots. If you’ve never eaten roast goat before – do give it a try. It’s a different and very pleasant taste. La dolce vita Sicilians, some say through the influence of the ancient Greeks, have a notoriously sweet tooth. You can add several squillion calories to your intake by sampling some of their desserts. Try the cannoli, which are pastry tubes filled with sugar and ricotta. You can also try cassata - which, true, is also found on the mainland but here you might find it to be particularly luscious. The local marzipan pastries are staggeringly good – but don’t be pounds-conscious while you’re eating them or you’ll have a breakdown! Eating and cooking Sicilians are some of the friendliest people on will be happy to help with both ingredients and approach.
