UPDATED 7:04 p.m. Thursday The NDP was down in a couple of new polls released Thursday, to thebenefit of the Liberals and Tories. The quarterly Corporate Research Associates survey had the New Democrats in a statistical tie with the officialOpposition Grits among decided voters. The NDP was down nine points to 35 per cent support. The Liberalswere up six points to 33. The Progressive Conservatives were up three points to 28 per centsupport, and the Green party had four per cent support, up onepoint. Sixty-four per cent of the 808 voters polled had decided whomthey"d vote for. The survey, conducted from May 7 to June 4,is considered accurate within 3.4 percentage points 19 times out of20. Premier Darrell Dexter was in second place in the choice forpremier with 23 per cent support, down six points from three monthsearlier. Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil led the way at 27 per cent, up sixpoints. Tory Leader Jamie Baillie was at 21 per cent, down a point. Satisfaction with the government declined seven points to 41 percent, matching the drop from November to February. Dissatisfactionincreased 10 points to 52 per cent. Corporate Research CEO Don Mills said the numbers seem to suggestthe NDP and Dexter have paid a price for power rate increases, though the government doesn"t control those, and cuts to theeducation budget. "At some point, dissatisfaction leads to less voter support, and I think we"ve certainly seen a fairly significant drop invoter support for the NDP in the last quarter for sure,"Mills said. Also Thursday, a national Angus Reid online poll found Dexter had the lowest approval rating among Canadianpremiers at 27 per cent. Brad Wall of Saskatchewan topped the listat 67 per cent. The May 21-28 poll of 6,599 people from the firm"s forumpanel has a margin of error of 1.2 percentage points 19 times outof 20. Angus Reid vice-president Mario Canseco said 350 NovaScotians were polled, for whom the margin of error was fivepercentage points. Canseco said one factor working against Dexter is having to contendwith two relatively strong opposition parties, while most otherprovinces only have one. "That certainly plays a role," Canseco said."That being said, his numbers are down 12 points in sixmonths, which is definitely not good." Dexter said he"s been through the ups and downs of polls manytimes in government and opposition. "We can"t become consumed or worried about what thecontent of those things are," he said. "You have to dowhat you think is right. "You just have to work hard and keep your head down and keepgoing forward." ( djackson@herald.ca ).
