This Service Can Seriously Boost Your Embroidery Shop Margin!

Business
When you think of the souvenir of choice at a tradeshow or special event, chances are it's a baseball cap that comes to mind. Honestly there's just nothing like it in terms of its universal popularity.

Because of this timeless appeal, any way that you can boost your skills in providing the highest amount of value to your customers with each custom hat order, the better chance you have of increasing profits on individual orders and retaining customers for life.

One value-added feature you can provide truly is a standout when you're talking about creating flawlessly decorated, truly customized hats in your custom apparel business. We're talking about creating sublimated hats.

Sublimation? Why Does This Service Stand Out?

It's easy to think that all techniques are about the same when it comes to embroidering or applying a design to the front of a hat. But sublimation is particularly helpful at boosting profits and keeping costs under control for an embroider who is customizing some of today's hottest hats - performance caps.

One of the reasons your customers want performance caps is because these hats have superior wicking properties that keep wearers cool, comfortable and dry. Certain other methods of embellishment can actually hinder a hat's wicking properties, but this isn't the case with sublimation.

Sublimation Allows Greater Customization

When you customize a hat, you're increasing its value to your customers. Sublimation is a technique that allows for greater customization of the hats you produce for your customers without overly increasing the cost of production, and gives you another opportunity to boost your profits via upselling this value-added service.

Tips For Smooth Sublimation Services

Knowing how to sublimate correctly is the key to boosting, rather than decreasing your profits.

1. Check your press for smooth operation. Preferably do this ahead of time - you don't want to discover that it is going to jerk the transfer right in the middle of things! Look for a tension brace to make sure it will hold your cap securely in place while you're working on it.

2. Check your hat as it is in the press - make sure there isn't any uneven pressure around the transfer's edges. Uneven pressure can cause creases to appear in the hat's fabric, creating a flawed end product that will ultimately cost you in time and money.

3. One way to avoid creases in your finished product is to use foam in the brace to distribute the pressure more evenly. This is a simple way to create a better quality end product - just cut the foam a little bit bigger than the transfer's image, but a little bit smaller than the paper. Use a little bit of heat tape for securing the foam as well as the Teflon, and bingo, you're good to go.

Steps For Sublimating A Cap

1. Avoid getting the brim near the heat source (this prevents scorching or burning).
2. Fold up the cap's sweat guard. This too will keep it from creating uneven pressure when the hat is being held in the press.
3. Check the hat once it is secured in the press. Making sure that it can't move is the number one key to preventing ghosted images from appearing after you're through.
4. Use a lint brush on the surface to be worked on in order to remove any stray pieces of lint that could mar your final product.

It's not super tough, but this simple process can seriously boost your profits and make you an embroider of choice for your customers.
