The displacing of the hip joint – which often occurs in babies and pets – may also develop in adults, medical doctors say. There are many types of hip dysplasia and are classified according to their severity and the time when it occurred. Thus, they may also vary in treatment. The most commonly heard type is the type that occurs at birth or congenitally. In a thousand births, one child is born with this medical condition and it needs to be detected and corrected as early as possible to have favorable results. The child may be evaluated first before surgery is performed to know if their body would be able to handle the stress of surgery and recover from the operation with zero to less complications.
Early identification of the problem also provides more options to choose from to salvage the diseased hip. Some people may just have a incomplete contact of the femoral head and the acetabulum – better known as subluxation of the joint. On the other hand, if there is total loss of contact between the acetabulum and femoral head, then that is already referred to as a dislocation. Thus, treatment with subluxation and dislocation may vary. If the joint problem is not addressed the person may eventually experience pain and swelling that may lead to the destruction of the joint due to arthritis.
To preserve the hip joint, a periacetabular osteotomy may be performed. This is a first option for most doctors because it causes less damage to the joint. The orientation of the hip joint is changed while the acetabulum undergoes a series of cuts then the femoral head is fitted. Screws are then placed to hold the joint in place. The procedure may be performed among children ages 11 years old and above. However, those who have severe arthritis may not be able to have good results.
