There are several air compressors available on the market and each have their own unique requirements and specifications to be able to operate. Some compressors operate on diesel fuel, while others are electricity based. However, there are three basic types of compressors namely reciprocating, rotary centrifugal and rotary screw compressors. Screw air compressors are most commonly addressed with the term rotary screw compressors.
What are Rotary Screw Air Compressors?
These devices are positive displacement compressors, particularly a gas compression unit that uses two opposing-threaded screws or rotors as a passage to propel air into a completely sealed chamber. The rotors have enough spaces between the thread taps and the threads for the gas to be injected into the threads. This causes the air to comfortably travel during the process when the thread spins in the chamber. Later, when the gas is injected through the thread, the chamber tends to compress.
The usage of two screws in these devices is mainly to compress the gas. There are no valves present. This mechanism is driven through a set of synchronized gears that compresses the gas by reducing the clearance within the threads and exits through the screw ends.
These compressors have a compact design and function quite smoothly and hence, do not need any sort of spring suspension. There is no vibration associated with these devices either. This helps in cutting down on noise and maintenance. Basically, there are two types of industrial screw air compressors, oil free screw compressor and oiled screw compressor. Let us further discuss these types in the following paragraphs.
Oil-Free Screw Compressor
These compressors are also called as dry screw compressors because they do not use any lubricant seal in any of its chambers. There are two types of rotors present in the compressor unit that accurately maintains the functioning with the help of a series of timing gears. These timing gears are imperative in this type of system because they determine the overall stability and maintenance of the operation. Oil free screw compressors are widely used in the semiconductor industries.
Oil-Flooded Unit
These types of industrial air compressors are used in sealing and cooling gas chargers. They have higher level of compressed air psi to provide cooling for gas charge and sealing. The two rotors in this unit are completely filled with lubricating oil. Although the unit is separated from the discharge stream when it is cooled, the oil is still effectively injected into the cavities. The main function of the oil is to develop a hydraulic seal within the two rotors during the process.
Rotary screw air compressors are highly efficient devices that offer low installation costs, 100% duty cycles, low noise levels, and practically prove to be the best solution in any industrial sector.
