Pellet hormone therapy is simply a type of HRT, or hormonal replacement therapy. As many women, and some men reach their early 50’s they may begin to experience menopausal symptoms. These symptoms can interfere with a woman’s normal life and can sometimes be painful and annoying. The symptoms are usually caused by a drop in the body’s natural production of progesterone and estrogen. Pellet hormone therapy is another way to replace these lost hormones; they are just injected into the body in an unusual manner. What Are Hormone Pellets? Hormone pellets are actually exactly what they sound like. They are small pellets that contain hormones. The pellets are about the size of a grain of rice and are usually synthesized from soybeans. They are completely natural. The hormones they contain are what are called Bio-Identical Hormones. This means that while these hormones were not naturally created by the human body, they are still an exact match to natural hormones on a molecular level. The pellets are generally inserted under the patient’s skin, so that the hormones can be absorbed once the body breaks down the natural pellet. This process is quite painless. The pellets are commonly inserted around the woman’s buttocks, because this offers very little pain or discomfort to the patient. What is In a Hormone Pellet? Hormone pellets contain estradiol, which is a very important type of estrogen and testosterone. Contrary to popular belief, women need testosterone replacement therapy in addition to estrogen growth hormone replacement therapy in order to relieve their menopausal and pre-menopausal symptoms. While many women will receive testosterone replacement therapy, they will not get that much of the hormone. Usually only around 10 to 20% of what a man would get in testosterone will be what is administered to women in pellet hormone therapy. There are several menopausal symptoms that testosterone can help cure, including stabilizing the woman’s mood, enhancing her brain function, increasing bone density to prevent osteoarthritis and increasing her libido. The pellets are usually given in a combination, but each individual pellet is made up of either pure testosterone or estradiol. Stearic acid is often added to the hormones, as it is a common ingredient in Pharmaceutical compounding medication and compounded pain medications. No other ingredients are added to the pellets. How Does Pellet Hormone Therapy Work? It takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months for the hormone pellets to dissolve under the patient’s skin and be absorbed into the body. Most people experience few problems with this type of therapy. Even people who are allergic to soybeans, which are what the pellets are synthesized from, typically don’t have any problems naturally absorbing the pellets. The patient then begins to experience relief from their menopausal symptoms. Who Makes Hormone Pellets? Because they contain hormones and because they are directly injected into the patient’s skin, only secure compounding pharmacy can make hormone pellets. Strict rules and safety protocols need to be followed to ensure that the hormones are properly created and that the pellets are synthesized in a sterile environment. Only trained Compound pharmacists can create hormone pellets.
