Have you considered metal recycling? Recycling is a responsible way to dispose of the huge amount of packaging that we accumulate from everyday consumer items. Food, home ware and any online orders often sold in large amounts of plastic or cardboard, either as a way to portion the item and aid transportation or as a means of protection. Recycling is kind to the environment and alleviates unnecessary wastage. Recycling of plastic, glass and cardboard or paper is commonly accommodated but metal recycling is less well catered for. Metal recycling refers to the break down and reuse of metal from anything as small as a drink can to larger items such as stoves, house hold ‘white goods’ like washing machines and fridges, loose scrap and cars. South Africa produces millions of tons of ferrous and non ferrous metal every year. Imagine if all of this went straight into a landfill. Metal takes a long time to break down. By using recycling equipment such as metal shearers to shred metal goods into small pieces, either to be reused or disposed of as a smaller mass we keep unhealthy landfills down. Recycled metal can be used instead of raw, i.e. previously unprocessed, materials in the production of new goods. The amount of water needed in manufacturing is less than when transforming raw materials. Air pollution is also reduced so as well as not adding to pollution in landfills you also reduce harm on the environment that comes from producing new metal for use in cars etc. Products made from recycled material can in turn be manufactured to be recyclable. It’s not only an environmental consideration in South Africa but an economic one too. The demand for more metal recycling is creating business opportunities. Waste management has proved a lucrative money maker for other forms of recycling around the world. It also creates jobs for ordinary workers, collecting and processing the waste. Lefort Metal supply world class metal recycling equipment to the African market. Find them online for more information.
