The 42ndannual Orangeburg Festival of Roses will be held on the 3rd to the 5th of May, 2013. This festival is a celebration to mark the blooming of the beautiful roses in Edisto Memorial Gardens. The Edisto Memorial Gardens is home to approximately 112 varieties of roses and is an All-America Rose Selections Inc., display garden. This is the opportunity for all residents and visitors in South Carolina to enjoy a fun-filled weekend of arts & crafts, live entertainment, rides and games, sports tournaments, exhibits and great food. Showcase Orangeburg is the premier event of the festival and has been since 1993. This is an event following the pattern of old-time variety shows featuring many talented musicians, singers and other groups and individuals. Showcase Orangeburg will be held on the 3rd of May at 7.30 pm at Stevenson Auditorium on Middle Street. Tickets for this event will cost members $10 and non-members $12. Tickets can be purchased at the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center. The Orangeburg Festival has entertainment for all ages. Children can enjoy themselves in the Kids’ Area in front of the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center. This area will feature inflatable activities for the kids and foods galore to be enjoyed by the young and the old. The arts& crafts show and sale will be held on Riverside Drive where interested parties will be able to purchase handcrafted items and specialty items at bargain prices. The Rose Festival Road Race will be held on the 4th of May and this year activities include a 12K run, 15K run/walk, and a 1 Mile Fun Run where everyone can have a good time. Canoeing and kayaking on the Blackwater will begin at 1 pm. This event is approximately 2 hours and after which there will be an awards ceremony for the winning contestants. Scenic air tours are also offered for those who wish to see the Festival of Roses from a few hundred feet up in the air. Seniors Day is on the 3rd of May from 2pm to 4 pm. This event invites all persons over the age of 50 to play bingo and enjoy refreshments while listening to the music of Mr. Cornell Berry. This will be at the Garden Stage in the Azalea Garden at the Edisto Memorial Gardens. “I am looking forward to this day” stated Mrs. Annabel Stephens, 55. “I enjoy myself immensely every yearand I’m sure I will do the same this year”. The golf tournament will be held on the 3rd and 4th of May at the Hillcrest Golf Course. This is an excellent activity for the 55 and better crowd and includes a number of games that seniors can enjoy.
