PULASKI COUNTY, Va. -- When ex-Marine Don "Doc" Cunningham returned home fromVietnam, there were no crowds cheering for him and no one around tohelp him deal with the trauma of experiencing war. "I can"t tell you how important it is to have communitysupport," said Cunningham. "Otherwise you feelisolated. And that makes it difficult to go on with yourlife." As a Vietnam veteran himself, bass fisher Wayne Fenton was in thesame boat – which is why he volunteered to take Cunninghamout on his boat for a relaxing day of fishing at Claytor Lake StatePark. "I felt like I could support our vets," said Fenton. "It was something I wanted to do and just a feel good thingfor me." They were one of about thirty pairs that cast off Saturday for thefirst ever Pulaski Wounded Warriors Fishing Day – a jointventure between community members, the Virginia Department of Gameand Inland Fisheries, and the Virginia Wounded Warriors Program tosupport the men and women who have paid a hefty price to defend ourfreedoms. "We specialize in veterans that have invisible wounds, suchas PTSD or traumatic brain injuries," said Matthew Wade,Regional Director for the Virginia Wounded Warriors Program. "And a lot of that means just getting out and connecting withother veterans." For most of the day Saturday, that"s exactly what they did. "Oh, he"s a nut, I love him," said Fenton. "He"s a great guy. He"s good. He catches onfast. I showed him a few tricks. He"s done everything Itold him to do. We just couldn"t bring any fish to theboat." Though some of the other vets got a few more bites, Cunningham sayshe wouldn"t have traded his day for anything. "All these people volunteering and helping out, it makes youfeel really good," said Cunningham. Organizers say based on the success of the first go-round, theyhope to make this event an annual one. "This is just a small way of giving back to them and showingthem we haven"t forgotten, we still care, and we appreciatewhat you"ve done for us," said Conservation OfficerTroy Phillips, who helped organize the event.
